There are many activities at NDU that won't be possible this year without outside support - educational activities that enhance the quality of student knowledge; social events that increase the networks that are critical to our National Security success; and discretionary funds that allow NDU leadership to handle unscheduled challenges that can't wait 2 years for a new government budget cycle to begin. |
|
Please consider supporting the activity or contributing towards the whole. Any support is appreciated! We enjoy thanking our donors and do so in a variety of ways - through naming opportunities, public recognition during events, and in our publications and on the website. We can't support NDU without YOU! Thank you for all you do…

NDU Foundation Writing Awards
The NDU Foundation is proud to support the annual Secretary of Defense, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Joint Force Quarterly writing competitions. The 2009 SecDef competition was intended to stimulate new approaches to coordinated civilian and military action from a broad spectrum of civilian and military students. Essays were to address U.S. Government structure, policies, capabilities, resources and/or practices and provide creative, feasible ideas on how best to orchestrate the core competencies of our national security institutions. The CJCS challenged students at the Nation’s JPME institutions to write research papers or articles about significant aspects of national security strategy to stimulate strategic thinking, promote well-written research, and contribute to a broader security debate among professionals. Joint Force Quarterly Kiley Awards select the most influential article in each of four JFQ departments: Forum, Feature, Interagency, Dialogue, and Recall. >>info on The Chairman's Strategic Essay Competition

NDU Leadership Discretionary Fund:
Discretionary Funds allow NDU Leaders the flexibility address issues that either can't be covered with appropriated funds or can't wait for the budget cycle (a two year planning cycle). One example of uses of Leadership discretionary funds - the Arabic Cultural Literacy Program, which provided a Middle Eastern language and culture course for NDU students who would be returning to the middle east and had identified an immediate need. Components often express the critical need for these funds.

International Counter Terrorism Fellows’ Distinguished Thesis Program
This evening event hosted by the NDU President has become an important annual tradition attended by the President, Senior Vice President, Provost, and leadership of key interagency clientele. For the current academic year we have added the NDU leadership, the NDU Board of Visitors, and NDUF Board of Directors to the invitation list. The program highlights 5 to 7 outstanding Masters Theses with the relevant student formally presenting his/her findings. The importance and success of the event are complemented by our ability to provide modest refreshments, which will only be possible with additional outside support.

INSS Conference and Symposium Support:
Funds are used to support expenses related to sponsoring or hosting the various conferences and symposia, which cannot be directly attributed to or apportioned among the respective budgets of the supported research projects and interagency work done by INSS. Funding is imperative to ensure viability of the vital conferences and symposia program that facilitates INSS’ ability to meet its mission of support to the greater NDU, as well as OSD, JCS, the combatant commanders, and interagency training. There has been a significant increase in the frequency and scope of the Joint Interagency Coordination Group (JIACG) education program, driving up the support requirements.

Reciprocal Graciousness
When we visit our international partners, gracious welcoming receptions and generous gifts are their cultural norm. Many would be mortified to not offer a welcoming reception! Conversely, we are severely limited to do anything comparable due to strict government regulations. Such a small thing can be a significant embarrassment and damaging to our attempts to fortify our networks. Perhaps hard to understand, but the ability to offer a small token or a glass of wine can have an impact on our National Security! Components such as the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies, the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, the Near East South Asia Center and Capstone are all severely under funded in this area this year.

Weapons of Mass Destruction Center Annual Symposium
The requested funds will be used to cover expenses incurred when conducting the WMD Center’s annual symposium, - the leading annual, classified gathering of the U.S. Combating WMD community. The symposium is one of the Center’s major outreach activities and the cost is not fully financed by the respective budgets of the Center's supported research projects. NDU Foundation support is essential to the Center's continued ability to conduct this event.

American Cultural Package - International Student Program
NDU's International Student Programs are a vital part of the impact NDU has on International Security and the presence of the students' famillies brings an added opportunity for breaching cultural divides. Funds contributed toward this package provide an opportunity for the International Officer’s spouses and children to participate in local orientation tours, family activities, and official Field Studies during their year in America. These activities help positively shape and influence the family’s impressions of America and American society. The local summer tours facilitate a successful transition to American culture and promote independence to seek and plan future activities. Additionally, they promote and encourage bonding and companionship between the families furthering the networks of friends working toward International Security when they return to their respective homes.

NWC Trip to United Nations :
For the past four years, NWC has sponsored a student trip to the UN for a Friday/Saturday visit. Unfortunately, all students who attend must pay their own way. It is a very successful program averaging about 80 to 100 students each year. This is one of the few opportunities for students to experience and learn about a key organization effecting the study of National Security Strategy. Funding the transportation portion of this event would help reduce costs for students from roughly $700 to about $350 per person.

Advance Management Program (AMP) Convocation and Graduation:
AMP Convocation and Graduation are each held twice per year. IRMC provides a light breakfast repast and a convocation reception for students attending the IRM College’s flagship academic program. Students include senior leaders across Federal Agencies, US corporations, and international partners. The reception immediately follows a formal convocation ceremony and includes food, beverages, and decorations. We are finding that catering and food costs are becoming significantly more expensive and have thus increased our request to reflect the increase. In recent years, we have had to “borrow” funds from the Director’s Discretionary Funds to fully fund the AMP events due to increasing catering costs.
