The American Patriot Award Gala, November 15, 2012
By Kristin Sobanski
On the evening of November 15, 2012, the National Defense University Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to joint professional strategic education and leadership development, honored Admiral William McRaven, and the Men and Women of the United States Special Operations Command by awarding them the American Patriot Award during its 12th annual Gala.
On the night of the event, more than 600 dignitaries and distinguished guests gathered at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Center in the heart of Washington DC to celebrate the dedicated service of the Men and Women of the U.S. Special Operations Command. Admiral William McRaven, their Commander, accepted the American Patriot Award on their behalf and offered his sincere appreciation for the quiet selflessness and spirit of commitment to which they unrelentingly adhere. "This award is a tribute to the bravery, devotion to duty and sacrifice of the 66,000 men and women from all services that make up U.S. Special Operations Forces and serve the nation every day in more than 70 countries around the world," says Admiral McRaven. The United States Special Operations Command has been active for 25 years and is unique in that it is not geographically bound, but rather relies on key relationships across the Department of Defense and the 90 nations of the global special operations command network.
Leon Harris, award winning journalist and anchor of ABC7/WJLA-TV and Chairman of the Sponsor a Patriot Program, once again served as the Master of Ceremonies and welcomed the distinguished speakers including National Defense University President Major General Gregg F. Martin, USA, , Mr. Robert K. Kraft, Chairman and CEO of the New England Patriots and Founder of The Kraft Group, Admiral Michael Mullen, USN (Ret), Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mr. Albert C. Zimmerman, Chairman of the National Defense University Foundation Board of Directors, and Cathleen Pearl, President of the National Defense University Foundation.
Admiral McRaven and the Men and Women of SOCOM join the distinguished company of past award winners including Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, former President George H.W. Bush, General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret), Henry Kissinger, and many others. The NDU Foundation would like to thank all of the generous sponsors and individuals whose participation and attendance made this event a resounding success. Your continued support of NDU through the Foundation drives progress at the University and will ensure NDU remains the crown jewel of national security joint education and leadership development. Thanks again you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you next year.

4th Annual Prism Author's Reception
To kick off the New Year, The National Defense University Foundation sponsored the 4th Annual Prism Author’s Reception, hosted by the Center for Complex Operations on January 15, 2013 from 6pm to 8pm at the National Defense University. The PRISM Authors’ Reception recognizes those authors and others who have supported one of the National Defense University’s premier publications, PRISM, in its first three years, as well as those who we hope will support PRISM in the future.
For those new to this publication, PRISM is the authoritative quarterly journal of national and international complex operations and is widely distributed throughout the defense, diplomatic, and development communities. Insightful articles are produced by thought leaders among policy-makers, practitioners, and scholars, on such challenges as reconstruction and stabilization, irregular warfare, political transitions, state building and fragility, and terror networks. Ambassador Thomas Pickering will make brief comments as a new PRISM advisory Board member. If you are interested in future opportunities to meet the men and women who are doing the complex thinking about the future of U.S. national security policy, send a quick email to Mr. Brett Swaney at swaneyb@nduf.org

| A TRIBUTE TO BRENT SCOWCROFT |
|

The NDU Foundation is beginning the New Year by looking ahead to one of our most highly anticipated events – a tribute to General Brent Scowcroft. Long overdue, the National Defense University and the NDU Foundation will honor the soldier, statesmen and scholar with the Lifetime International Statesman and Business Advocate Award on March 13, 2013
The award is being given in recognition of Lieutenant General Scowcroft’s vast contributions to the security and well-being the of the United States. As a graduate of the National War College in 1968, the National Defense University was only the beginning of his dedicated service that has reached across six decades, including terms as National Security Advisor to Presidents George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford, and Deputy National Security Advisor to President Richard Nixon.
As Colin Powell once said, “There is no one steadier in a crisis and more purposeful than Brent Scowcroft…No one is better at policymaking in that sense than Brent Scowcroft…A great public servant, a great manager in crisis, a reliable human being who has added to the honor, to the dignity and to the purposes of our country.” The upcoming ceremony is a unique opportunity to foster and demonstrate appreciation for General Scowcroft’s legacy of wise, consistent, visionary U.S. leadership and effective US foreign policy and international security management.
In keeping with General Scowcroft's legacy as one of the premier public servants of our time, funds raised through this tribute will benefit the National Defense University Foundation's mission to advance the university's programs as the preeminent joint national and international security educational institution charged to develop the next generation of international leaders.
For those interested in learning about participation opportunities, please contact Katherin Griffin Hand, V.P. for Special Projects at 202.685.2528 or katie@nduf.org
